I was driving to a hair appointment the other morning and talking to God about praying when he changed the subject. He shared a verse with me and an explanation that totally changed my understanding of planning. The verse he shared was Jer 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”. This is a familiar verse to many and I knew it as soon as he shared it. But then pointed out that the plans are to give us a hope and a future. They involve a short-term and a long-term plan. The hope is the short term plan for now…you don’t need hope in the future when things come to pass… and the long-term plan is to get us to the future.
I saw it in an instant. Many of us will take care of our needs in the moment at the expense of our futures. This is what Esau did when he sold his birthright for an immediate meal to meet his hunger needs. Others will sacrifice their happiness now for a win in the future. But the Lord doesn’t operate this way. He proves a hope now that we can rest in as we walk out his plan for our future. How amazing! I am always completely amazed and grateful when the Lord reveals his ways! His training is far superior to any other!
